Growing up Chinese American in a multigenerational household has deeply influenced my perspective and my art. My exhibition, "Cash Only," is a reflection of this journey, capturing the nuances of my cultural heritage through the medium of wheel-thrown pottery and sculptural elements. Utilizing the coil technique, each piece I create is a testament to the labor and love that defines the immigrant experience.
For the past decade, I have dedicated myself to the craft of pottery. My journey began in San Francisco, where the vibrant community and cultural richness shaped my early artistic endeavors. Now based in Portland, I continue to hone my skills and share my passion for pottery as a teacher. This dedication is evident in the work presented in "Cash Only," where a significant portion of the pieces are primarily wheel-thrown, showcasing the precision and care that go into each creation.
The title "Cash Only" speaks to the realities faced by many Chinese immigrants who often find themselves in cash-based jobs upon arriving in America. These roles—whether in restaurants, butcher shops, or sewing factories—are not just means of survival but also symbols of resilience and perseverance. My work seeks to honor these experiences, highlighting the strength and dignity in these professions while also exploring the personal and collective memories they evoke.
Through the tactile process of shaping clay, I connect with my roots and convey the stories of my family and community. Each piece in this show is a narrative vessel, carrying the weight of tradition, the struggles of adaptation, and the triumphs of maintaining cultural identity in a new land.
"Cash Only" is an ode to my heritage and a tribute to the hardworking individuals who continue to inspire me. It is a celebration of the rich tapestry of Chinese American life, woven with threads of history, labor, and love.
